A forehead that's too high or too large can throw off your facial balance and detract from your proportionate features. When this occurs, forehead reduction (also known as hairline lowering) can move your hairline to a more natural location.

The basics: Hairline lowering at a glance

  • Lower your hairline by up to 2 inches
  • Minimal scarring
  • Natural-looking results
  • Procedure takes 2 to 3 hours

Candidates: Is this procedure right for you?

Dr. Reinblatt recommends hairline lowering surgery for patients who:

  • Have a naturally high hairline or large forehead
  • Feel self-conscious about the size of their forehead
  • Have no personal or family history of hair loss
  • Feature sufficient scalp laxity for the surgery
  • Are in good physical and emotional health
  • Possess naturally thick hair

High Forehead Due to Receding Hairline

If your high forehead is due to a receding hair line, forehead reduction is not an ideal option for you.

With this procedure, a scar is made in the frontal hairline. In ideal candidates, this scar will be well-hidden by hair in the area. With a history of hair loss, the scar will be more noticeable. As such, the best way to achieve your desired results is likely with a hair transplant.

Your forehead reduction surgery

Forehead reduction surgery is done on an outpatient basis under a combination of twilight and local anesthesia. It begins with Dr. Reinblatt marking the location of your new hairline.

From there, she will excise the skin between your current and future hairline, before moving your scalp with hair down to its new location. She will then secure the tissue into place with dissolvable bone anchors and close the incisions with two layers. In many cases, she will perform a hair grafting procedure like FUE at the same time to ensure a natural result.

Once your procedure is complete, Dr. Reinblatt will apply a light compression garment to minimize swelling and bruising and promote healing.

The recovery: What to expect

  • Swelling on the forehead, scalp and cheek area that can last several weeks
  • Hairline numbness that can last a few weeks to several months
  • Mild to moderate bruising around the eyes
  • Avoid strenuous activity for at least two weeks
  • Most patients can return to work in a couple of days

FAQ

What will my scars look like?

Dr. Reinblatt goes to great lengths to minimize the visibility of forehead reduction scars. She will carefully place the incisions behind your new hairline, so they will be covered with your hair. She will also ensure that new hair can grow through the scars, which will further obscure them.
