Candidates: Are you ready for this procedure?

Double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Reinblatt, recommends gynecomastia surgery for patients who:

  • Don't smoke
  • Are close to their goal weight
  • Are in good physical and emotional health
  • Have realistic expectations for surgery

Your gynecomastia surgery

In most cases, gynecomastia surgery is a blend of procedures and techniques designed to contour a more masculine chest. It's done under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia and commonly includes the following surgeries:

Step 1 Liposuction

Dr. Reinblatt will begin most gynecomastia surgeries with liposuction to remove unwanted fat from the area. While she extracts the excess volume, she will also contour the chest and restore your masculine definition.

Step 2 Excision

Liposuction can only address unwanted fat. As such, Dr. Reinblatt often performs excision as well to remove loose skin and excess glandular development from the chest.

Step 3 Areola repositioning

Once Dr. Reinblatt has sculpted a flat and firm chest, it is likely that your nipple-areola complex will look a bit off. To ensure a natural and balanced outcome, she will reposition the nipple and areola to a different location on the chest.

The recovery: What to expect

  • Your entire recovery period will last 3 to 5 days
  • You can return to sedentary work after 5 days
  • You can return to an active job in approximately one week
  • Avoid sleeping on your stomach and putting pressure on your breasts
  • You can expect moderate swelling and bruising on the breasts and donor site
  • Avoid exercise and strenuous activities for a few weeks, until your body is fully healed

Do you need to fix inverted nipples?

Once your swelling has dissipated, the results of your male breast reduction will be apparent. Dr. Reinblatt carefully places the incisions within the natural contours of your body, so they will be very difficult to identify once the healing process is complete.

Gynecomastia surgical results tend to be very long-lasting. However, you need to address the underlying cause of your condition, otherwise your gynecomastia can return. In addition, your chest can change in appearance over the years due to the natural aging process.
